Em 1895, auge da Revolta dos Cabanos, o povo boinense fugiu para a mata. Um certo homem religioso, todavia, tratou d
e esconder a imagem de Santo Inácio de Loyola. Embora pesada, escondeu-a atrás de uma árvore de Sapupema e a cobriu com folhas de Piririma e Samambaia.
Após o fim da revolta, os moradores retornaram à Vila e deram pela falta do Santo. O homem, então, disse o local do esconderijo e os comunitários puderam levá-lo à Igreja.
Entretanto, noutro dia novamente o Santo havia sumido. Dessa vez, ninguém sabia onde encontrá-lo.
Resolveram procurar atrás da árvore e, para surpresa geral, lá estava ele. Levaram-no por três vezes à Igreja e em todas ele voltava para trás da Sapupema.
Uma senhora idosa, curandeira, consultou os astros e disse que o Santo queria uma Igreja nova. Começaram, portanto, a construção de um novo templo com a frente para o rio, como é de costume. Quando a construção estava quase finalizando, um forte temporal a destruiu completamente. Não desistiram. Voltaram aos trabalhos e novamente veio a baixo. Fizeram por três vezes e todas caíram. Novamente consultaram a curandeira, que garantiu que deveriam construir a igreja como tinham encontrado o santo, ou seja, de lado para o rio. Assim fizeram e a igreja está até hoje de pé, com algumas remodelações feitas em 1949 e em 2005.
