Uma das principais propagandas feitas para convencer dos benefícios que o Porto da Cargill traria para a região de Santarém, era a promessa de geração de milhares de empregos. Mas na audiência pública, dez anos depois, ao responder uma pergunta sobre quantos empregos a empresa gerava para a população de Santarém, o diretor da empresa resolveu abriu o jogo, alegando que foi uma falha na comunicação.
“Sobre essa questão da geração de empregos com a implantação do porto, teve um problema de comunicação, pois o número divulgado foi muito superior ao que na verdade o terminal gera, que hoje é numa faixa de uma centena de empregos. Desses, a maioria são santarenos, inclusive já tem um funcionário no escritório central da Cargill em São Paulo que foi empregado aqui e progrediu dentro da empresa. Se for implantada uma unidade industrial aqui, serão gerados cerca de 200 empregos diretos. A principal vantagem pra economia local, são as vantagens indiretas criadas pela circulação da renda por todos os produtores além dos empregados”.
Imagine se a população de Santarém tiver que ver chegar empresas como a Cargill provocando e incentivando tantos impactos sociais e ambientais, sem se comprometer ao menos em recompensá-los, fazendo tudo isso em troca de uma centena de empregos? Se o principal são os benefícios indiretos pela circulação do dinheiro nos bolsos dos produtores de soja, então já podemos ver que a situação é crítica mesmo, porque são raros os produtores de soja que são efetivamente da região, pois a maioria veio de outras regiões do país. Mas não devemos ficar preocupados, porque já temos um santareno trabalhando no escritório em São Paulo! É uma grande vantagem!
