Líderes de Projeto Extrativista são assassinados em Nova Ipixuna, PA

No mesmo dia em que a Câmara dos Deputados tentar votar a revisão do Código Florestal Brasileiro, que mesmo antes de ser votado já provocou aumento do desmatamento na Amazônia, mais uma triste notícia veio para quem defende a vida. O assassinato de mais líder comunitário e sua esposa, por defender a preservação da floresta.
Informações do Conselho Nacional dos Seringueiros:
Maria do Espírito Santo da Silva e José Claudio Ribeiro da Silva, líderes do Projeto Agroextrativista Praialta-Piranheira, foram assassinados na manhã desta terça feira (24), a 50 km do município de Nova Ipixuna, sudeste do Pará, na comunidade de Maçaranduba.
As ameaças contra a vida do casal de extrativistas começaram por volta de 2008. Segundo familiares, desconhecidos rondavam a casa de Maria e José Cláudio, geralmente à noite, disparando tiros para o alto. Algumas vezes, chegaram a alvejar animais da propriedade do casal. O momento das intimidações coincidiu com a denúncia dos líderes extrativistas contra madeireiros da região, que constantemente avançam na área do PAEX, para extrair espécies madeireiras como castanheira, angelim e jatobá.
Para Atanagildo Matos, Diretor da Regional Belém do CNS, a morte de José Cláudio e Maria da Silva é uma perda irreparável. “Eles nos deixam uma lição, que é o ideal dos extrativistas da Amazônia: permitir que o ‘povo da floresta’ possa viver com qualidade, de forma sustentável com o meio ambiente”, diz Matos. “Já estamos em contato com o Ministério Público Federal, Polícia Federal e outras instituições. Apoiaremos fortemente as investigações, para que esse crime não fique impune”, afirma o Diretor do CNS.
Trabalho – Maria e José Cláudio viviam há 24 anos em Nova Ipixuna. Integrantes do Conselho Nacional das Populações Extrativistas (CNS), ONG fundada por Chico Mendes, foram um exemplo para toda a comunidade. Desde que começaram a viver juntos, mostravam que era possível viver em harmonia com a floresta, de forma sustentável. “O terreno deles tinha aproximadamente 20 hectares, mas 80% era área verde preservada”, conta Clara Santos, sobrinha de José Cláudio Silva.
“Eles extraíam principalmente óleos de andiroba e castanha, além de outros produtos da floresta para sua subsistência. Graças à iniciativa dos meus tios, atualmente o PAEX Praialta-Piranheira tem um convênio com Laboratório Sócio-Agronômico do Tocantins (LASAT – Universidade Federal do Pará), para produção sustentável de óleos vegetais, para que os moradores possam sustentar-se sem agredir a floresta”, revela Clara.
Assentamento – O Projeto de Assentamento Agroextrativista (PAEX) Praialta Piranheira situa-se à margem do lago da hidrelétrica de Tucuruí. Foi criado em 1997 e possui atualmente uma área de 22 mil hectares, onde encontram-se aproximadamente 500 famílias. Além do óleos vegetais, o açaí e o cupuaçu, frutas típicas da região, garantem a renda de muitas famílias.
