Devido à sua enorme biodiversidade, não é exagero dizer que a principal riqueza natural do Brasil é a Amazônia. É dentro dessa imensa região que está situada Santarém, no Pará. Uma cidade privilegiada em fazer parte desse paraíso onde terra, rios e florestas sempre chamam atenção. Além do encontro das águas dos rios Tapajós e Amazonas que encantam os visitantes, outra característica dessa região é a hospitalidade do seu povo. A população que aqui vive tem um patrimônio cultural fantástico, porém a distância dos grandes centros de poder (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, por exemplo) torna-o esquecido e excluído. Por isso, é necessário ver a Amazônia como uma região socialmente diversificada, e não somente como uma grande floresta.
Atualmente, movimentos sociais e ONGs, trabalham intensamente para reverter essa situação. Em Santarém, destaca-se o Projeto Saúde e Alegria (PSA), uma organização que atua na Amazônia desde 1987. O trabalho do PSA é voltado para qualificar a população para atuar de modo ativo e determinante em torno do desenvolvimento e defesa do seu próprio ambiente e, é claro, em favor da Amazônia, além de contribuir de maneira demonstrativa com experiências práticas para as comunidades ribeirinhas.
Dentro das estratégias de Educação e Mobilização Social do Projeto Saúde e Alegria, surgiu a Rede Mocoronga de Comunicação Popular, um movimento que visa contribuir para a formação da cidadania da juventude, sobretudo, apoiar as ações protagonizadas pelos grupos de jovens através do trabalho de comunicação.
Nesse contexto, busca-se promover a formação de lideranças antenadas com a luta do povo por melhores condições de vida, pela proteção da Amazônia e o fortalecimento da identidade cultural da “juventude da Floresta”.
A Rede organiza o fluxo intercomunitário dos programas de comunicação popular e qualifica os materiais produzidos pelas comunidades. Essas produções são veiculadas nas rádios e jornais comunitários, sendo expandidas para outras regiões e, ao mesmo tempo, permitem que a população tenha acesso às realidades de outros lugares. Além desse programa da Rede Mocoronga, existem também os programas de Saúde, Empreendimentos Sustentáveis, Desenvolvimento Territorial e Educação, Cultura e Comunicação. Todos com o mesmo objetivo, contribuir para o fortalecimento da organização e desenvolvimento das comunidades. O Projeto Saúde e Alegria, nesse sentido, tem contribuído de forma significativa com os trabalhos desenvolvidos em favor da Amazônia.
Apesar de toda essa mobilização que há pela preservação da Amazônia, é fundamental o reconhecimento e a valorização efetiva de sua grande diversidade, que ainda parecem muito abstratos, sobretudo em relação aos direitos e aos conhecimentos da sua população.
