A população ribeirinha tem como parte da sua cultura, a crença em várias lendas, como exemplo as lendas do boto e do curupira.Muitas pessoas contam histórias que dizem ter presenciado ou que tenha ocorrido com algum conhecido, são os chamados causos, acontecimentos que passam oralmente de pessoa para pessoa, e de geração para geração.
Vamos conhecer agora alguns causos contados por comunitários da comunidade de São Pedro: “Um homem foi caçar e de repente o curupira começou a assoviar. O homem disse para o curupira: -Olha , tu não assovia muito se não te dou um tiro. Depois disso, o curupira passou a assoviar mais alto, então o caçador passou a atirar para a banda dele, e de repente, ele sentiu algo balançar a sua rede. O homem resolveu ir embora, pois já estava sentindo-se mal e ardia em febre. A partir desse dia, o caçador aprendeu a nunca mais duvidar do curupira.”Esse causo foi contado pelo comunitário Graciliano, que sente grande prazer em contar suas histórias.
A menina Vanuza nos presenteia com um causo sobre o boto: “Um casal morava na beira do rio. Acontece que o marido fazia parte de uma banda, e passava muitos períodos fora de casa. Uma noite, o marido chegou e a mulher ficou muito feliz, depois ambos foram dormir. E toda noite ele voltava para ficar com ela. Passado alguns dias, a mulher escutou alguém bater à porta, e ficou muito surpresa ao constatar que era a voz do seu marido que a chamava, pois ele estava deitado ao seu lado. Quando foi abrir a porta viu que era mesmo o seu marido e correu para o quarto, e no mesmo instante, viu que o outro pulava a janela e entrava no rio. A partir daí, descobriram que se tratava do boto, e então resolveram fazer uma armadilha para pegá-lo: o marido chamou uns amigos , e cada um se posicionou em uma parte da casa. Já tarde da noite o boto apareceu gerado no marido, quando os homens o avistaram começaram a atirar, o bicho saiu correndo de volta para o rio, mas como foi atingido não teve tempo de entrar completamente na água, ficou metade homem e metade boto.Um tempo depois, a mulher descobriu que estava grávida, e no dia que teve o bebê, ela ouviu os botos boiarem e fazerem muito barulho na água, e para fazer com que eles se conformassem, entregou a criança para eles criarem.”
Esses e muito outros causos fazem a cabeça dos ribeirinhos, que misturam a realidade e a ficção, criando assim um mundo envolto em magia.
