O drama da grande enchente de 2009: onde a ciência se encontra com o discurso popular

Na Amazônia, a enchente de 2009, além de causar prejuízos para populações ribeirinhas, também abalou algumas certezas que tinham sobre o ciclo natural do rio.

As populações tradicionais da Amazônia, especialmente das comunidades ribeirinhas, são consideradas como “povos das águas”, acostumadas à vivência cotidiana com o rio, que é ao mesmo tempo seu caminho, seu sustento e sua identidade. É assim, numa ilha rodeada pelo rio Amazonas, onde fica a comunidade Valha-me Deus, no Município de Juruti, Oeste do Pará. Lá, 35 famílias vivem relação diária com o grande rio. O Sr. Enéas Bruce da Silva, liderança da Associação Comunitária local, conta que “o rio significa muito na vida da comunidade. A gente vai ali no lago e pega um peixe pra alimentação. O nosso transporte é sempre pela água, a criançada já nasce aprendendo a nadar”.
Essa vida quase de uma liturgia diária com o rio, tem seus ciclos aos quais o povo já se acostumou e para os quais sempre teve explicações, a partir de seus conhecimentos populares. É o caso das enchentes e vazantes dos rios. Na comunidade do Sr. Enéas, assim como na grande maioria das localidades em regiões de várzea, as casas são construídas com um assoalho alto ou palafitas, prevendo o tempo que o rio vai subir.
E como saber o volume das enchentes e vazantes? “Meu avô Manuel Bruce contava uma história que dizia que todo dia 31de dezembro, eles colocavam a água do rio numa garrafa, e quando era dia 1o de janeiro, colocavam a água em outra garrafa e faziam uma pesagem. Se a água de janeiro pesasse mais, era certo que a enchente do novo ano seria maior”, conta o Sr. Enéas com um certo ar de ironia.
Entre mitos e verdades, saberes do senso comum, uma coisa podia ser considerada certeza. Havia sempre um equilíbrio esperado no volume das águas e da seca, o que, por exemplo, fazia com que as construções das casas seguissem uma certa linha de altura acima do chão.
Mas, em setembro de 2009, quando gravamos esta entrevista, seu Enéas não estava sabendo explicar muito bem por que o rio havia enchido muito mais que o normal, inundando todas as casas da sua comunidade. “Não foi só porque a água de 2008 pesou menos!”, comenta com o mesmo bom humor. “A ilha do Valha-me Deus é uma das ilhas mais altas da região, mas nesse ano, todos os assoalhos foram para o fundo, o que fez com que muitas famílias ficassem desabrigadas. Tivemos muitos prejuízos com a perda de animais, das criações de gado, acabou nosso bananal, o canavial e até um açaizal que tínhamos, a água levou”, explica seu Enéas, agora com a seriedade da situação vivida.
Depois de uma grande seca em 2005, que deixou milhares de comunidades isoladas na região, veio a grande cheia de 2009 que atingiu a marca de 9 metros, o maior índice já documentado, ultrapassando a marcar histórica de 1953. Comunidades inteiras foram alagadas, famílias sem moradia, prejuízos financeiros, problemas de saúde, foram alguns exemplos dos efeitos dessa grande enchente.
Esta situação foi vivida nos diversos rios da nossa região, não apenas nas comunidades de várzea, que estariam mais acostumadas com as enchentes. Desta vez, até a frente da cidade de Santarém e cidades vizinhas ficaram inundadas. Atingiu também as comunidades do Rio Tapajós, onde as habitações em geral não são palafitas. Mesmo estando à margem do rio, sempre havia uma distância considerada inatingível pela água fluvial.
A enchente de 2009 mudou essa certeza para os moradores da comunidade de Porto Novo, no Município de Belterra e para muitas outras às margens do rio Tapajós. Seu José Bento, tinha um mercadinho de frente para o rio. Era o ponto de encontro dos comunitários e turistas que chegavam à vila para apreciar a bela praia da comunidade. Em um vídeo caseiro gravado pelo jovem Ailton Pereira, Josebino mostra o prejuízo do mercadinho que foi destruído junto com sua casa, pela força da água. “A marca da água tá lá no pé daquela árvore. Foi muito grande, foi muito difícil pra quem convive aqui na beira desse rio. O pessoal mais antigo fala que em 53 teve enchente grande, mas não foi que nem essa. Essa foi a maior de todas”.
O Sr. Antônio Soares, da mesma comunidade, conta que no dia três de maio, foi o dia em que houve o maior temporal que assustou os moradores. “Veio uma onda que eu nunca tinha visto, com mais de dois metros de altura que chegava dentro das casas”.
Variações do clima
O que estaria acontecendo com o clima na Amazônia, provocando esses fenômenos extremos. Seu Soares arrisca uma resposta. “Isso é coisa da natureza. Mas a coisa não é mais como era antes, isso é efeito do homem também. A natureza tá dando resposta, que ninguém brinca com ela, que ela vem buscar resposta sim”, comenta o ribeirinho.
Aqui, o saber simples do homem ribeirinho, encontra pontos em comum com estudos científicos sobre o que vem ocorrendo com o clima no planeta. Há cada vez mais conexões, mesmo que ainda não conclusivas, entre estes fenômenos e as mudanças climáticas decorrentes do aquecimento global, no qual a amazônia tem papel destacado.
O relatório “Riscos das Mudanças Climáticas no Brasil, publicado pelo INPE em maio de 2011, aponta que “A Floresta Amazônica desempenha um papel crucial no sistema climático, ajudando a direcionar a circulação atmosférica nos trópicos ao absorver energia e reciclar aproximadamente metade das chuvas que caem nela”. Além disso, o relatório destaca que “a Amazônia pode ser classificada como uma região sob grande risco em virtude das variações e mudanças do clima. O risco não é somente por causa das mudanças climáticas projetadas, mas também pelas interações sinérgicas com outras ameaças existentes, tais como o desmatamento, a fragmentação da floresta e as queimadas…”.
O Relatório do INPE explica que “As enchentes(de 2009) foram o resultado de chuvas extraordinariamente fortes na Região Norte do Brasil e que estiveram, em geral, associadas às temperaturas mais altas que o normal na superfície do mar no Oceano Atlântico Sul tropical, condições quase opostas às observadas durante a seca de 2005”.
A Amazônia está periodicamente sujeita a enchentes e secas, mas estes exemplos demonstram a vulnerabilidade das populações humanas e dos ecossistemas dos quais elas dependem aos atuais eventos climáticos extremos. Assim, podemos entender que ao mesmo tempo em que a Amazônia é importante para o equilibro climático, pode ser também a parte mais afetada por esse desequilibro.
Os cientistas afirmam que o aumento na intensidade e na frequência dos eventos extremos geram preocupação. “Uma grande seca em 2005, outra grande seca em 2010, pulando de um recorde de cheia antes em 2009. A pergunta é: o clima está ficando cada vez mais variável? Não podemos afirmar nada categoricamente, mas chama atenção. Quando a gente olha por registro histórico conhecido da amazônia, desde que existem medidas do Rio amazonas e Negro, não temos nenhuma sequência com tanta variabilidade. Mas isso ainda não nos permite dizer que o clima mudou na Amazônia, nós estamos prestando atenção, pra saber por que que o clima ficou tão variável nos últimos anos. Pode ser um acidente estatístico, ou não, pode ser uma manifestação precursora do tipo de variabilidade climática que a amazônia vai enfrentar no futuro”, disse o cientista Carlos Nobre, pesquisador do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais – INPE, em palestra realizada no dia 1o de julho de 2011 em Santarém.
Se para a ciência existem muitas dúvidas, elas também existem para as populações ribeirinhas. “Esperamos que essa seja uma das últimas enchentes, mas ninguém sabe o que vem por ai”, diz seu Antônio Soares. Dúvidas, mas também certezas de quem sofre as consequências das transformações do clima. “Com o tempo, houve uma mudança muito forte. Os verões estão ficando cada vez mais intensos. Com o pouco que água vaza, vai dificultando o transporte, e logo que o rio enche, a égua vem chegando cada vez mais forte. As casas precisam ser sempre mais altas”, comenta a professora Silvielane da Silva, moradora da comunidade de Carapanatuba, várzea de Santarém.
E assim, o “povo das águas” vai levando a vida, esperando que a água, fonte de vida, não se torne sinal de desespero. Seja no Rio Tapajós, como na ilha isolada no meio do Rio Amazonas, enquanto se espera que a ciência possa explicar, resta o sentido que deu nome à comunidade do seu Enéas Bruce, do início da reportagem: Valha-me Deus!
