Índios isolados, um tema que o Brasil precisa entender

Eu deixei de ser um homem isolado ou, para os antropólogos, pertencente à um povo isolado. Isso, em parte porque, desde menino tenho quase fascinação por rádios, ondas curtas, radioamadorismo, propagação, antenas, etc. Com o tempo acumulei algum conhecimento sobre isso e, em razão dele e de estar no lugar certo na hora certa acabei recebendo o convite para avaliar a implementação de um sistema de comunicação via rádio junto aos Zo´é.
Não se trata uma viagem trivial. Pegar um avião mono motor e, depois de uma hora de bastante emoção, pousar num pista de pouso de chão batido, na Frente de Proteção Etnoambiental Cuminapanema. Lá está a vida dos Zo´é, um grupo indígena de cerca de 250 pessoas que preservam em muito as suas tradições e modo de viver.
A reserva etnoambiental fica nos municípios de Óbidos e Alenquer a 253 quilômetros de Santarém, Pará, em linha reta. Não existe acesso fluvial, só aéreo ou dias de pernada, como se diz entre os indigenistas. Na reserva só se pode entrar com autorização da Funai e o que você faz lá dentro é acompanhado de perto pelo coordenador do posto e pelos cinco funcionários da Funai. O coordenador do posto, João Lobato, é uma figura de grande importância na manutenção da cultura Zo´é e no controle dos contatos deles com a cultura ocidental. Volto a falar dele mais adiante.
Os Zo´é tiveram contato “oficial” com os brancos em meados da década de 1980. São caçadores, coletores e cultivam a mandioca. Tem uma cosmogonia complexa que, pela pouca compreensão do idioma, é cercada de suposições baseadas na observação.
No primeiro momento, quando você sai do apertado mono motor muito bem pilotado pelo experiente Comandante Walter, os Zo´é logo se aproximam, na curiosidade de saber quem são os visitantes e o que trazem. Já nesse primeiro contato a sensação é de descoberta de uma estética e um forma de se relacionar entre seres humanos impactante. Os Zo´é são grandes, porte físico bem definido e uma enorme facilidade em sorrir. O adorno que usam abaixo do lábio inferior são a sua marca étnica e são gradualmente colocados como alargadores a partir da segunda dentição, crescendo de tamanho aos poucos. Chamam-se m’berpót e são feitos a partir de uma árvore nativa, o Poturú. Não usam vestimentas, apenas um laço no pênis e as mulheres uma tiara. Aparentam o que se pode imaginar um estado de constante felicidade. A curiosidade é maior que tudo e as primeiras perguntas são acompanhadas do toque, do tato sobre o que é incomum para eles. O tato sobre a minha farta calva é diversão na certa.
Os Zo´é tem uma especial curiosidade sobre a família ou sobre como nos organizamos como agrupamentos. Os funcionários da Funai tem algum domínio do idioma, o coordenador do posto tem um conhecimento bastante aprimorado do idioma e a todo instante negocia com eles sobre temas dos mais comezinhos à questões complexas como o contato com os índios Wai-Wai que tentam levar a mensagem missionária evangélica para dentro da reserva. As perguntas aos visitantes, ainda no caminho até a sede da Frente continuam. Na língua deles querem primeiro saber seu nome. Ao ouví-lo quase todos que estão por perto o repetem. Como os orientais, têm dificuldades de pronunciar a letra L, daí que eu ouvi muito, “Pauro, Pauro, Pauro”, acompanhado por um abraço ou uma mão de criança sugerindo caminhar junto. Depois vem o interesse sobre esposa e filhos. Sempre riem quando a resposta é uma esposa ou um filho só. Aplicada a pergunta a eles tanto homens como mulheres respondem muitas vezes três para maridos ou esposas e cinco, com muito orgulho na expressão, sobre filhos. Os Zo´é quando contatados eram 133 em 1991.
A curiosidade e a liberdade com que vivem no contato com a natureza e com seus corpos é igualmente desafiadora para quem traz as culpas e as travas da religião. As cores com que algumas vezes se pintam (como algumas mulheres completamente cobertas com um vermelho de urucum) impressionam pela beleza e graça. Assim que você chega o João Lobato, coordenador da Frente há cerca de 12 anos, orienta o visitante sobre o comportamento que devemos ter entre os Zo´é. Entrega duas páginas impressas com um conjunto de “mandamentos” para a fruição, sem danos, da cultura, modo de viver e desenvolvimento daquela gente.
A Frente é um tem um cuidado paisagístico impressionante. O João Lobato e sua equipe fizeram, ao longo desse tempo, intervenções que surpreendem o olhar de um observador que tinha a expectativa de condições precárias para uma Frente da Funai para populações isoladas. Tudo é de muito bom gosto. Os índios não trabalham para a Funai e ficam, depois de ter ganho o dia com a caça, sentados no chão, conversando entre si e sobre o tema de nossas famílias durante algum tempo. As vezes são uns quarenta ali, no entorno da sede da Frente, crianças e adultos, encostado a você, brincando com sua barba ou querendo entender porque a mulher branca esconde o seio. Os homens e as crianças andam freqüentemente com seus arcos e flechas. As crianças, com cinco anos, já começam a brincar com os seus arcos e sabem manejar facas para afiar as flechas. As flechas dos Zo´é são ricamente decoradas e muito precisas. Na região se encontra com certa facilidade paca, tatu, porcos-do-mato e macacos. No fim do inverno, começa a temporada de caça aos macacos; nessa época, mais bem alimentados. Em abril, saem para caçar urubu-rei e, em caso de fracasso, os homens ficam em maus lençóis. Toda mulher usa tiaras feitas de penas de urubu-rei e a renovação do estoque de penas é tema crucial da afirmação masculina nas relações conjugais, segundo explicou o coordenador da Frente.
As crianças brincam o tempo todo e surpreendem a cada momento com sua capacidade de aparecer e desaparecer de um segundo ao outro. Logo quando surgem, repetem seu nome e fazem caretas, como que convidando para brincar. Sentam no seu colo e gostam de ouvir os nomes em português das partes do corpo em seguida do toque de seus dedos. Não é para aprender as palavras porque logo voltam a tocar na ponta do seu nariz e puxar a sua barba e cair na risada. A calva, como se poderia esperar, é a parte do corpo mais demandada, entre carinhos, beijos, tapas e tentativas de beliscões.
A sociedade Zo´é é poligâmica e poliândrica. Como nos diz Rosa Cartagenes, “O casamento poligâmico, tanto masculino quanto feminino, é um dos pilares fundamentais da extensa rede de alianças entre os diversos grupos familiares, com relevância para a poliandria, que entre os Zo’é é altamente estimulada e desejável socialmente como esteio das relações familiares e políticas. Ressalte-se que entre os Zo’é a poliandria não é eventual nem apenas “tolerada” como mecanismo de equilíbrio demográfico,” O mais interessante é a relação com os filhos. Uma mulher pode ter filhos de outros maridos, mas os seus filhos são igualmente filhos dos pais dos seus irmãos. Ou seja, uma criança Zo´é é cuidada por dois ou três pais, por exemplo.
Outro tema muito importante para entender a complexidade do universo Zo´é é a ausência de hierarquia. Os Zo´é não têm pajés ou caciques. O contato com os índios Wai-Wai, que vez por outra invadem a reserva, são uma das principais fontes de tensão do João Lobato. Vê-lo investido de seu personagem é compreender um pouco o que é viver para a preservação daquela cultura. Enquanto estive lá, o João pouco saía da sede da Frente, evitando conversar com os Zo´é e aparentava alguma tristeza. À noite, quando conversávamos sobre a forma de fazer política dos Zo´é, João me explicou que a tradição é de muita conversação e negar a conversa é uma demonstração de grande insatisfação do interlocutor. João fazia o “constrangimento” com grande capacidade de convencimento. Dava para imaginar os Zo´é debatendo sobre o seu silêncio e aborrecimento.
A indignação do João Lobato tem motivo e é algo que pode colocar em risco a harmonia que está estabelecida entre os Zo’é: o contato com os Wai-Wai. Os índios Wai-Wai são contatados há muito tempo e têm relações com missionários evangélicos. Na Funai, há 54 missões religiosas cadastradas, mas o número pode ser maior, já que muitos missionários conseguem se infiltrar entre os indígenas, sem o conhecimento do órgão. Para exemplificar o problema, basta conhecer a que se propõem as grandes missões internacionais evangelizadoras. A Jovens com uma Missão, JOCUM ( ) está no Brasil desde 1960 e mantém centenas de missionários espalhados pelo país levando a idéia de família monogâmica, da necessidade da vestimenta, da hierarquia (é mais fácil controlar um agrupamento social controlando e negociando com um só líder). Outras missões importantes são a Missão Evangélica aos Índios do Brasil – MEIB ( ), organizada em 1967, com o objetivo de expandir o Evangelho de Jesus Cristo, promover o estudo da Bíblia e a educação em geral, praticar a beneficência e organizar igrejas entre a população indígena e a New Tribes ( ) que é uma das maiores missões evangélicas em atuação no Brasil e está presente em 47 aldeias de todas as regiões do país. Na luta contra essa distorção da tradição cultural Zo´é, João Lobato é um resistente, até o momento com muito sucesso, com seu estilo muito próprio e obstinado.
Para tentar entender o que se está fazendo na Frente e Proteção Etnoambiental Cuminapanema é preciso rever a perspectiva com que você leu este texto. Posso ser entendido como católico que somente cita os evangélicos como vetor de problemas para a “harmonia” política e cultural dos Zo’é. Não é fato, é específico nessa reserva o não contato, há muito tempo, com missões católicas, como o Conselho Missionário Indigenista ( ). Mas sim, concordo com a intervenção do Estado na gestão do isolamento dos Zo´é, como fundamental para sua preservação e me encanto pelo trabalho lá feito no campo da saúde indígena.
Mas o que é importante desta história é a compreensão de assumir a impossibilidade de superioridade de perspectivas, como se pode ler na tentativa de síntese do perspectivismo:
“A idéia básica (que não é uma idéia simples) do perspectivismo, tanto o indígena como seu análogo ocidental, é que toda posição de realidade especifica um ponto de vista, e que todo ponto de vista especifica um sujeito ― nessa ordem. No caso indígena, tal especificação é em primeiro lugar uma especiação, pois a diferença de ponto de vista entre humanos e não-humanos é ali uma questão fundamental, e a realidade assim posta compreende a realidade reflexiva do sujeito, individual ou coletivo, pois toda posição de auto-identidade envolve a “perspectiva do Outro” como um momento constitutivo. O perspectivismo implica portanto a alteridade: a diferença como ponto de vista, o ponto de vista como diferença ―e a diferença como positiva, nos dois sentidos da palavra.”
A preservação daquela cultura e daquele modo de viver é dever do Estado brasileiro. A identidade cultural brasileira é também Zo ´é, por mais distante que nosso comportamento globalizado e ocidental a negue. O suspiro de originalidade que eles representam precisa ser re-significado para o que é ser brasileiro. E, se ser brasileiro for também Zo´é, ser brasileiro há de ser melhor.
